Liu Wenwen, from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, is China's first Ph.D. student majoring in suona, a traditional Chinese musical instrument.
In 2017, Liu Wenwen collaborated with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to play "Hundreds of Birds Paying Homage to Phoenix", a masterpiece that often represents excellence in suona performance, at the Sydney Opera House, reacquainting people with suona and presenting a "dialogue between East and West music".
Liu Wenwen said that many people believe suona could produce a sharp tone. In fact, suona can be endowed with more new connotations.
Liu planned to hold an international tour of suona concerts. She hoped to pass on this particular instrument, not as a highlight of the entire show, but as a focus.
