A passenger ship departing from Kinmen arrived at the Xiamen Wutong Ferry Terminal in southeast China's Fujian Province on Tuesday, ushering in the 20 millionth passenger on the cross-Strait Xiamen-Kinmen ferry route.
Mr. Tsai, a resident of Kinmen, has been a regular passenger on the Xiamen-Kinmen ferry route since 2001. He cannot hide his excitement. After coming to Xiamen University by ship to study for his master's and doctoral degrees, and then working in Xiamen, Mr. Tsai has lost count of the number of times he has traveled between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait via the Xiamen-Kinmen ferry route.
The Xiamen-Kinmen ferry route was opened on January 2, 2001. At that time, there were just over 20,000 passengers crossing the border annually. Today, after more than 20 years, the number of passengers on the Xiamen-Kinmen ferry route has exceeded 20 million, and the route has become a "golden waterway" for compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to travel.
