Following China's Village Basketball Competition and Village Super League, Village Volleyball Game, has become the latest sports fever across China.
Concluding Sunday night in Wenchang in the island province of Hainan, the one-and-half-month volleyball league has taken the city, a rising tourist boomtown famous for its space launch center.
The event brought players from towns and villages, including farmers, fishermen, migrant workers, teachers and middle school students.
The Village volleyball league games ignited rural sports passion in Hainan, attracting more than 480,000 people to watch the game.
"Volleyball has long been a popular sport in Wenchang. We are very impressed by the promotion of volleyball here to the extent that everyone loves this sport," said Wei Qiuyue, former captain of the Chinese women's volleyball team, "Volleyball has been integrated into people's daily lives. It is also the charm that fitness for all brought to us."
Lim Chiew Ah, president of the Federation of Hainan Association in Malaysia, hopes that by holding this village volleyball event in Wenchang, younger generation of expatriates can return to their hometown to watch the volleyball matches. Thus, they could learn about the beauty of their hometown and experience the vitality of the place.
