Farmers in Lujiang, southwest China's Sichuan Province, have reaped a bumper harvest of 2.2-meter-high "giant rice," a new hybrid rice variety developed by Chinese agricultural experts.
The giant hybrid rice was planted in a total area of about 180 mu (about 12 hectares) this year. It can grow 2.2 meters high with a root system of 40 centimeters. The yield can reach 600 kilograms per mu (0.0667 hectares), which is 30% higher than that of ordinary rice.
