Online retailers in parts of China ran out of salt on Friday as Japan started releasing nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday.
It can be seen that the low sodium salt and non-iodized salt of multiple e-commerce platforms have been marked as sold-out on Friday.
In some supermarkets in Shanghai, many residents were busy buying salt products. Some shelves appeared empty of salt, but staff have been transferred much from the warehouse.
Wang Xiaoqing, executive director of the China Salt Association, said he did not recommend following the example of South Korean people stocking up salt. China's edible salt production can meet people's needs.
