People of the Dong ethnic group attended a fair to celebrate their traditional New Year festivities in Jianhe County, southwest China's Guizhou Province.
Hua'ao Village, located in Jianhe County of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, hosted an annual grand festival celebrating the arrival of the Dong ethnic group's New Year. Female villagers dressed in traditional Dong ethnic costumes while the rest of the village gathered to greet relatives, friends, and guests.
Local villagers put on Dong operas, sang grand Dong songs, made glutinous rice cakes, held a long table banquet, showcased the harvest of their agricultural products and socialized with neighboring villages during the festival.
As a unique new year for the Dong people and an intangible Chinese cultural heritage item, it falls around the Winter Solstice Festival each year. It is a traditional festival for Dong people to thank their ancestors for their blessings, reunite with family, celebrate the harvest, and showcase their ethnic culture.
