As the Chinese New Year approaches, Hongqiao Flower Market has bloomed in Shanghai to welcome the upcoming Spring Festival.
This year, the market has prepared kumquats, wintersweet, peonies, cyclamen and silver willows, which signify good luck, wealth and prosperity. Bergamot is the most popular among young people this year.
Every Lunar New Year, people would like to buy tangerines and peonies with good implications. Tangerine means good luck and peony means richness and prosperity. They symbolize good luck in the coming year, according to Wang Xiaofeng, a merchant at Hongqiao Flower Market. "The period near the Spring Festival is the peak season for sales of flowers, and also the most bustling time of the year in the flower market," she added.
Zhao Yunfei, an employee from a flower shop, told the CNS reporter, the plants such as butterfly orchid with bright colors and long florescence have sold well. He was quite surprised to see this year, lots of young people prefer bergamot. It is a relatively new type of flowers, which means good luck and has medicinal value.
