If you visit Yundang Lake in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, you’ll find crystal-clear water, with fish swimming visibly at the bottom and birds flying gracefully over it.
Yet, originally, this lake was once a fishing harbor. Pollution then caused the lake water to turn black and emit foul odors as urban expansion progressed.
Then in 1988, Xi Jinping, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Xiamen Municipal Committee and executive vice mayor of Xiamen, proposed a strategic plan to clean up the lake once and for all.
After more than 36 years of management, Yundang Lake has now completely transformed.
This lake is a shining example of Xiamen’s ecological governance, showing the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
