Established in 1983, the Altun Mountain Nature Reserve lies in the south part of Ruoqiang County, adjacent to Qinghai Province in the east and Tibet Autonomous Region in the south, covering an area of 4.5 square meters, which is the biggest comprehensive reserve nowadays in the country. The nature reserve is situated in a closed basin surrounded by high mountains at an altitude of 4500 meters.
The species and high density of wild animals cannot be seen in other part of the country, including wild yak, Tibet wild ass, antelope, argal, bharal, snow leopard, lynx, brown bear, golden eagle, snow cock, wild goose.
