A Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday urged Japan's leader to "take a correct attitude toward history and concrete actions to win the trust of its Asian neighbors."
Spokesperson Lu Kang's remarks came after Kyodo reported Monday that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe may not seek Cabinet approval for his statement to mark the 70th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II, as he aims to highlight its personal nature.
Lu said Japan's leader should deeply reflect on its history of aggression, adhere to the solemn statements of former leaders and remain on the path of peaceful development.
Japan's Asian neighbors, including China, are concerned about the Japanese leader's remarks and attitude on past issues, said Lu.
People in Japan are also keeping a close watch, Lu added.
