The rising China has practiced a unique model of diplomacy that shows to the world that the country's development will not lead to neo-imperialism, a Brazilian expert said Sunday.
China's diplomacy has indicated its commitment to peaceful development and mutual benefits, said Argemiro Procopio, professor on international relations from the University of Brasilia, in a recent interview with Xinhua.
COMMITMENT TO GLOBAL PEACEFUL DEVELOPMENT
China overtook Japan to become the world's second-largest economy in 2010.
According to Procopio, a great country like China shall assume its due international responsibilities and promote peaceful development around the globe while seeking economic growth.
China's Belt and Road Initiative, announced in 2013, has displayed the country's commitment and determination in this aspect, he said, referring to the land-based "Silk Road Economic Belt," which stretches from China to Europe through Central Asia, and the oceanic "Maritime Silk Road" that connects Southeast Asia and East Africa through the waters of the Indian Ocean, the Gulf and the Suez Canal.
Procopio stressed that China's proposal aims to use its technological expertise and financial strength to accelerate the social and economic development of countries along the routes.
He also said that China's plan to invest 100 billion U.S. dollars in the promotion of this initiative has aroused the interests of over 47 countries.
Marcos Sawaya Jank, columnist of the Folha de Sao Paulo daily, also noted that China, with the focus on infrastructure construction to enhance the connectivity of major cities along the routes, will establish its influence on the political and economic landscapes of the regions concerned.
FAIRER WORLD ORDER FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
As the world's largest developing country, China still faces a number of domestic challenges such as poverty and unbalanced development.
"This makes China a representative of the developing nations and a defender of their interests. It is fighting for a fairer and more equitable world order," said Procopio.
According to the Brazilian scholar, the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank exemplifies China's resolve to boost infrastructure construction and overall development in developing countries.
Procopio also stressed that because of its cultural tradition and socialist ideology, China will not become one of those countries that practice neo-imperialism.
The reason, he argued, lies in the fact that China has always opposed conflict and confrontation and upheld equality, mutual respect and win-win cooperation in international affairs.
"So it will not pursue aggression and expansion, or compete with the U.S. for global hegemony," he added.
Speaking of Brazil's relations with China, the No. 1 buyer of Brazil's raw materials, Procopio said it can be a good example of healthy international relations that feature mutual benefits and win-win results.
"China is now making efforts to cooperate with Brazil on production capacity building and manufacturing industry development," said Procopio.
