Highlights of foreign congratulatory messages on Xi's election as Chinese president (10)

Congratulations have been pouring in from around the world since Xi Jinping was elected Chinese president by a unanimous vote last week at the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's national legislature.[Special coverage]

Xi was also unanimously elected chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).

In their congratulatory messages, leaders of foreign countries, political parties and organizations expressed confidence that under Xi's leadership, China will achieve greater prosperity and make more contributions to world peace and development.

The following is an edited version of some of the messages.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier extended his best wishes to Xi, saying that he would like to work with Xi to further advance the close and friendly relations between Germany and China.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that in the past few years, the Germany-China comprehensive strategic partnership has provided a stable framework for cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

She expressed willingness to work with Xi to continue to deepen cooperation and promote a greater development of the partnership between Germany and China.

Merkel also wished Xi a continued success as Chinese president.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said that during Xi's state visit to Finland in April 2017, the two leaders comprehensively planned bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas.

The two sides are negotiating a work plan for advancing the future-oriented new-type cooperative partnership between the two countries, he said, noting that he believed the plan will guide Finland-China pragmatic cooperation and promote cooperation between the two sides.

Denmark's Queen Margrethe II extended her sincere congratulations and best wishes to Xi and the Chinese people.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said he deeply believes that in the new era, Xi will continue his untiring effort to bring welfare to his nation.

He said he wants to continuously deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and wishes the great Chinese people happy and well.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said Xi's election demonstrates Xi's outstanding leadership to realize the country's grand development goals, as well as the trust Chinese people have in him.

He believed the Chile-China comprehensive strategic partnership and friendly cooperation would be further expanded and bring more benefits to the two peoples.

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Keith Rowley said under Xi's leadership, China will be increasingly prosperous and strong with extraordinary development achievements.

Trinidad and Tobago, and China share mutual trust, mutual respect, mutual benefit, and win-win results, he said, adding that his government is committed to enhancing the friendly relationship between the two countries.

President of Guinea-Bissau Jose Mario Vaz said the Chinese people have been sharing weal and woe as well as the same destiny with the Guinean people since the early period of their struggle for national liberation.

He said he will spare no effort to work with Xi to jointly develop and consolidate the traditional friendship and mutually supportive and cooperative ties between the two countries and the two peoples to bring benefits to the two peoples.

Governor-General of Papua New Guinea Sir Robert Dadae said he believes that under Xi's leadership, the friendly ties between the two countries and the two peoples will be further strengthened in the interests of both sides.

President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic, President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and Chairman of A Just Russia party Sergei Mironov are also among those who sent their congratulatory messages or letters to Xi.
