As approved by Chairman Hu Jintao and the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the new edition of The PLA Military Terms has been issued to the whole army for implementation on December 21, 2011.

Military terms are standardized military phrases used in a unified way by the whole army during combat, training and other military work. They are the standard language of Chinese servicemen.

The issuance of the newly revised edition of The PLA Military Terms is a major scientific research achievement accomplished by the Academy of Military Sciences (AMS) under the unified leadership of the PLA Military Terms Management Committee. The AMS organized various relevant departments of the whole army and spent four years on the new edition which includes the latest results of innovative development of China's military theories and China's military practice.

The new edition of The PLA Military Terms consists of 26 categories including "General", "National Defense", "War • Strategy" and "Combat (comprehensive)", with 8587 entries. All together it has 1.05 million characters and 195 pictures (graphs), and each entry is annotated with its English version.

Among all the categories, 6 categories, namely, "Combat (comprehensive)", "Handling of Crises and Emergencies", "Armaments Work", "Military Laws and Regulations", "Military Diplomacy" and "Ground Force", are newly added.

The new edition also includes over 4,000 new entries to meet the needs of the revolution, modernization and standardization of the PLA and the joint operation under the information-based conditions. These new entries also reflect the changes and development in the military field.

The new edition covers various professional fields such as military, politics, logistics and armaments, highlights the innovative development of Communist Party of China's military theories, and reflects the latest achievements in national defense and army building in the new period. It meets the basic needs of joint operation under the information-based conditions and embodies distinct features of the PLA and the times.
