(Ecns.cn)--Thousands of people flocked to Apple's main stores at Xidan Street and Sanlitun Village in Beijing on Thursday night, some 10 hours before the iPhone 4S made its debut on the Chinese mainland.

Apple fanatics, scalpers and people hired by scalpers stayed up all night waiting for the doors to open despite a nippy minus 9 degrees Celsius.

A dozen police vehicles parked on Xidan Street as cops dispersed private cars in the area and tried to get the disordered mob under control. The next morning, the store sold out in little over an hour, and each customer was allowed to purchase only two sets at most.

At the flagship store in Sanlitun Village, a fight between scalpers led to the termination of scheduled sales of the iPhone 4S, according to a news roundup. The move enraged scalpers waiting outsided, some of whom yelled and threw eggs at the glass walls of the store.

Later, the majority of people waiting to buy iPhones at Sanlitun Village went away, but some customers still queued up in hopes that the store would change its mind.
