An explosion triggered by old scores between two villagers in Lianyuan City in central China's Hunan Province killed five people and injured six on Sunday, China's Lunar New Year eve, local police said Monday.

The explosion occurred at around 11:50 a.m. when a man surnamed Liao broke into the home of his cousin in Tielu village and detonated the explosives strapped to his body at the dinning table, police said.

Liao and two people died at the scene. Eight others were sent to a hospital for emergency treatment, where two severely-injured died later. The remaining six were in stable condition.

Police said the deceased included Liao himself, Liao's cousin, the cousin's parents and a child, whose age and identity was yet to be confirmed.

Initial police investigation suggested that Liao and his cousin may have some disputes over land use.

Police said Liao came back only a few days ago after having worked in the cities for years. Further investigation was under way.
