Purchasing unregulated knives in Beijing does not require real-name registration, Beijing municipal police said on Sunday in the wake of press reports claiming otherwise.
No identification is needed to purchase knives for everyday use, such as kitchen knives less than the official limit of 22 cm in length, according to a statement released by the municipal police.
However, for regulated knives, such as those longer than 22 cm or lock knives, real-name registration is required, it said.
Knife sellers are also prohibited from selling knives to minors or people with mental disorder, it added.
It was recently reported that some supermarkets in Beijing had been requiring customers to present ID cards when buying any knives.
"It may be because those stores want to avoid the trouble of telling regulated knives apart from unregulated knives," the Beijing Evening News reported on Sunday.
