In mid-winter, a winter field camping training of a regiment under the Jinan Military Area Command (MAC) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) was conducting in full swing in the Jiaodong Peninsula of east China's Shandong Province. Unlike the previous years, the winter training troops that used to carry only light arms carried all the information-based equipment that had been newly fielded in large quantities to the troop unit.
The reporter saw on the training site that in the command post of the troops, there was a newly-upgraded integrated command platform besides the sand table and maps; the commanding officers of battalions and companies were not only equipped with compasses and telescopes, but also the "BeiDou" system; besides, the reconnaissance element was even equipped with various types of information-based equipment including a new-type radar vehicle, a laser range finder and a wireless video transmission terminal…
In view of that the winter trainings in previous years had only focused on improving the troops' viability, the regiment reviewed the traditional training mode and added information-based contents into the training.
With a view to improve the information skills of the officers and men, the regiment drew up the winter training plan and centered the training on 15 items of 4 aspects including the operation of the information-based equipment, the application of the command information system and the combat command under information-based conditions.
The reporter saw from the training schedule that in addition to such traditional subjects as the forced march and the march in accordance with the prepared routes that played the leading role in winter trainings of previous years, the ratio of information skill training subjects increased substantially.
