Four people died and 28 others were injured when a bus plunged off an expressway bridge in the southwest province of Guizhou on Tuesday, local authorities confirmed.
The bus crashed off a 20-meter-high bridge after the driver lost control when swerving to dodge another vehicle, the publicity department of Yuping county committee of the Communist Party of China said in a press release.
It said the accident happened at around 9 a.m. on an interprovincial expressway linking Shanghai with Kunming city, capital of Guizhou's neighboring Yunnan province.
The bus, carrying 33 people including three children, was en route from Guizhou's Zhenyuan county to Huaihua city in the central province of Hunan, it said.
The document said three people died at the scene and another died later in hospital.
Three of the injured people were in critical condition, it said.
The document did not say what happened to the children. Nor did it identify any of the victims.
It said the cause of the accident was under investigation and there was no clear evidence indicating the bus was overloaded.
