Woodcut prints by Yang Hongwei @ Today Art Museum

As ancient tools reflecting triumphs in human civilization, how can a humble chisel and block of wood serve as a guide for artists into the future? The technical procedures of woodcut printmaking require restraint and patience, which makes it a challenging yet rewarding art form. This exhibition features some of the best woodcut prints by Tianjin-born artist Yang Hongwei. Yang, 43, has been engaged in woodcut printmaking for almost 20 years. His oeuvre in both woodblock printing and wood engraving never ceases to surprise viewers. His impressive energy and variety of mark-making obscures the portrayed subject matter, often leaving artworks open to interpretation by viewers. This exhibition displays his latest works including The Water, The Fire, The Stone, The Wonderland and The Millennium Monument.

Inside a Book, A House of Gold' joint exhibition @ UCCA

The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) presents this joint exhibition in collaboration with Parkett. Installed across three of four exhibition spaces at UCCA, "Inside a Book, A House of Gold" takes its title from a poetic description by the most artistic of Chinese emperors, Song Zhenzong (968-1022). Inside this "house" are more than 200 artworks by 192 artists that are being presented for the first time to a Chinese audience.

The works, which collectively offer a portrait of the situation and evolution of contemporary art at the turn of the 21st century, are classified and exhibited according to the logic of domestic space. The works cover diverse mediums, including painting, photography, drawing, print, sculpture, video, and sound. Some distill the essence of a given artist's work, while others reveal an unexpected dimension.

Each of these rooms takes on a special feel and character, aided by walls of consciously different colors.

Where: UCCA, 798 Art Zone, 4 Jiuxianqiao Lu, Chaoyang district
