A 25-year-old woman has been given a lenient two-year jail sentence after stabbing her boyfriend, who subsequently asked the court to "go easy on her," Xuhui People's District Court said Wednesday.
A native of Hubei Province, the woman surnamed Hao, and her boyfriend, surnamed Chen, who is 18 years older than her, testified that she accidentally stepped on Chen's dog last year, which started a fight the day before the incident.
Their quarrel escalated the next day, during which Hao "irrationally" grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed him in the chest and stomach, she told the court.
She rushed Chen to hospital immediately, where he was treated for injuries, the most severe of which were to his spleen. She later apologized to Chen for losing her mind, and turned herself into police.
In court, Chen pleaded for the court to give her a lenient sentence, on the basis that he had forgiven her and that she had been good to him during the nine months of their relationship before the incident.
The court took Chen's testimony into consideration and gave Hao a lighter sentence for her crime, which typically warrants at least three years in jail, according to Chinese law.
It further reasoned that Hao had "confessed to her wrongdoing with much regret, and as such deserved leniency in her punishment," Hou Rongkang, a press officer for the court, told the Global Times Wednesday.
