Mom’s touch fails to win appeal

2012-03-13 10:09 Global Times     Web Editor: Zang Kejia comment

A mother, who appealed to a court of law seeking a more lenient sentence for her son after he stabbed her with a fruit knife at a local airport, has lost her case.

Her 24-year-old son, surnamed Wang, will continue to serve three and a half years for his crime, which put his mother in a temporary coma last year, Shanghai First Intermediate People's Court ruled Monday.

After Wang was charged, the family argued that he suffered from a mental disorder, which involuntarily caused him to violently unleash his anger at his mother over a dispute about tuition fees, the court earlier heard.

The court, however, denied the claim, ruling that Wang had not suffered from any mental disorders at the time of the crime, sentencing him to jail.

The appeals court upheld the ruling Monday, but Wang Haiwen, a press officer for the court, declined to comment on how the court came to the verdict when contacted by the Global Times Monday.
