The art of balance

"Our biggest differential is undoubtedly the impeccable and highly personalized service we offer each guest, unmatched anywhere else," says Raghu Menon, who manages both the Ritz-Carlton Beijing and the JW Marriott Hotel Beijing.

"In addition, the Ritz-Carlton Beijing offers culinary experiences like no other, with dining and entertainment options including restaurants, bars and lounges."

Raghu had 16 years experience in the hospitality industry before he was appointed manager at the hotels. It's a task he views as exciting, more than challenging. "We need to constantly make sure that they are two independent brands," he said.

The differences are definitely perceptible in the food and drinks they offer. The Ritz-Carlton Beijing is more international, while the JW Marriot Beijing focuses on regional cuisines. This difference is also reflected in the demographic of the hotel guests.

Raghu pointed out that the JW Marriot Beijing's Sunday brunch caters more to families, while at the Ritz-Carlton Beijing, the atmosphere is more sedate, that of a classic high-class property.

In order to retain guests with an increasingly discerning appetite, Raghu realizes the importance of a constantly evolving menu of fresh, interesting ingredients. Holding exclusive events such as seafood nights are also key.

Raghu and his team feel it is important to support the local community through charitable work. Their events have expanded from visiting homeless children to offering food, clothing and financial support.

"We invite our guests to participate in this. We call it the 'Give Back Get Away program,'" Raghu added.
