(Ecns.cn)—Two sports cars, both Peugeot 308CC models, were purchased on March 5 for road patrol by the traffic police department of Xichang, city in Southwest China's Sichuan Province, the Sichuan Online reports on Tuesday.
The next day, the luxury patrol vehicles made quite a splash when they rolled out with the city's female traffic police behind the wheel. As a matter of fact, curious residents asked to have their pictures taken with the glamorous patrol cars. Soon after, an outcry was heard on the web about the necessity of such pricey vehicles.
Li Jun, head of the patrol unit, defended the purchase, saying these high-profile sports cars are for patrols only, and the motive is to uplift the city's image as a hot tourism destination.
Mao Wenting, a patrolwoman in Xichang, explained that their responsibilities remain unchanged but the well-equipped cars can help a lot, given that local weather undergoes drastic changes in the space of one day.
