An official from the Information Center of the National Tourism Administration denied recent media reports that China is mapping out a specific plan to open the Xisha Islands to tourism.

The official also clarified that Deng Xiaogang had already stepped down as deputy director of Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission about half a year ago.

Deng was previously quoted by the media as saying that China is designing a specific plan to open the Xisha Islands to tourists.

In an interview with the People's Daily, Deng stressed that "I am not the deputy director any longer, and haven't given anyone an interview related to tourism development on the Xisha Islands. The reports online are pure fabrication."
