China targets safety accidents at construction sites

2012-04-11 15:52 Xinhua     Web Editor: Su Jie comment

China will conduct a targeted check of construction projects to guard against safety accidents related to lifting machinery and scaffolding, according to a circular issued by the Work Safety Committee of the State Council.

Major targets of this round of checks include railways, highways, electrical projects, water resources and housing projects, according to the statement.

Potential risks related to lifting machinery and scaffolding will come under closer scrutiny, said the committee, as they are hoping to avoid collisions and collapses in particular.

It ordered companies to carry out self-inspection tests during the May-September period, and to prepare for random checks during the October-November period.

While calling for stricter supervision and management over the construction, the committee also vowed to hand down harsh punishments to firms engaging in illegal practices, including disqualified contracting and subcontracting.

It said it will try to lower the accident and death rates in 2012.

Over the years, China's construction sites have seen frequent tragedies because of poor safety precautions.

In one severe case, a fire at a 28-story apartment building in downtown Shanghai in 2010 killed 58 people after welding sparks set nylon netting and scaffolding alight during an exterior renovation.
