Nearly 90 percent of surveyed nurses feel intense pressure in the work place as a result of difficult labor, psychological influences and disproportionate pay, according to survey results released on Saturday.
The survey, conducted by the China Hospital Association in March 2012 among 8,000 nurses in 59 hospitals, showed that only 10.3 percent of nurses believe the intensity of their work is at an appropriate level.
While more than 79 percent of respondents said they are more aware of their personal rights as the result of nursing regulations introduced in 2008, only 60.2 percent indicated that they feel respected by others.
Yu Xiaochu, vice president of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, said nurses' welfare and working conditions should be improved, asking society to pay more care and respect toward nurses.
Official statistics state that China has 6.2 million health care workers, of which nurses account for 2.24 million, or 36.1 percent.
The 100th International Nurse Day will fall on May 12.
