(Ecns.cn)--Lai Changxing, the kingpin of a notorious smuggling ring, has been sentenced to life imprisonment on smuggling and bribery charges by the Intermediate People's Court of Xiamen, reported the Xinhua News Agency on Friday.
The court also ordered that Lai be deprived of political rights for life and be stripped of all his personal assets.
Lai was proven to have smuggled articles worth about 27.4 billion yuan. He also evaded paying taxes of around 14 billion yuan and offered money and merchandise equivalent to nearly 39.13 million yuan to 64 Chinese officials, according to Xinhua.
