"A woman is very tolerant and flexible like water. Sometimes we need to be tactful like water to handle different situations," said Angela Pan, General Manager of the Renaissance Beijing Chaoyang Hotel. Having been at the hotel for a year as the only female to ever fill this position there, Pan is keen to use the great characteristics of being a woman to her advantage.
Fortunately, with 16 years of experience in the hospitality industry with the Marriott International group, she has been lucky to be employed by companies that pride themselves on gender equality. "Being a general manager has similar pressures for both men and women," Pan says. "I feel if you have proven yourself as fully capable of filling the position of general manager, people won't care about whether you are a man or woman."
Pan has certainly proven herself more than capable. Within the year that she has worked at Renaissance Beijing Chaoyang Hotel, revenue has substantially increased, as has service quality and guest satisfaction. As a lifestyle brand, Renaissance Beijing Chaoyang Hotel is dedicated to presenting new discoveries for all guests and under Pan's leadership, the hotel has made great achievements in terms of guest experience.
Pan has her own strategy for hotel management. "You should always put yourself into other's shoes whenever you deal with customers or associates. Building up high team spirit is also critical for a leader; you need to get all your key members involved in hotel decisions and goal setting," she said.
"I am very happy to have a team here that works together to achieve the same goals," she added.
Pan enjoys working in the hotel industry and is especially passionate about the Renaissance brand. This lifestyle brand empowers her to be creative and fashionable to ensure guests stay in the hotel and associates work there.
