CCTV Tower open, but still nameless

The State broadcaster China Central Televsion (CCTV) has refuted online rumors that the company has settled on a name for the CCTV Tower, which was finally completed on May 16.

The name "Zhi Chuang," which means the window of wisdom, is not the chosen name, CCTV told the Global Times yesterday. Web users suggested the name would not be a wise choice, as the word sounds similar to the Chinese word for piles, or hemorrhoids.

According to an insider working at CCTV, the search for an appropriate name began in 2008, but so far, the name has not been announced.

"We haven't named the building Zhi Chuang. The final name hasn't been publicized yet and even my colleague and I don't know the name," said the anonymous member of CCTV's administration department.

He added that as construction is complete, he believes the name will be announced soon.

The futuristic building, often referred to colloquially as the "big pants" has attracted much controversy since the design first debuted.

"The new CCTV building is named Zhi Chuang? It sounds like piles. Compared with the big pants, it's much worse," a Web user named Fangzhiliang posted on Sina Weibo.

However, some believe the name would be a fitting choice, since CCTV is an important window to transmit the wisdom of China to the world, and the design is like a huge window.

Pictures uploaded online by CCTV staff show that CCTV staff started moving into the new headquarters in May.

Many residents fear that as the building goes into operation, traffic on the adjacent East Third Ring Road may worsen. Local rents have also increased, said real estate agents.

"We've seen an increase in the area's rent, partially due to the new building, since many employees will want to live nearby," said Wang Huixin, from real estate company Zhonghexinheng.
