The vice-chairman of the Jiangyan committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Jiangsu province is under investigation for a traffic accident that left one woman dead.
According to Nanjing-based Modern Express, Chen Wenya hit a young couple with his vehicle on June 23 and was spotted leaving the scene of the accident without checking on their condition.
Eyewitnesses said Chen was picked up by another car after he ran over the couple, according to the newspaper run by Xinhua News Agency's Jiangsu branch.
The man suffered minor injuries while the woman later died in a hospital, the report said.
A notice Jiangyan's public security bureau posted online on June 24 said that the phone calls Chen made after the accident were to 120, the emergency center number, and a hospital.
"They were calls to 120 and a hospital, and Chen was calling for the rescue,"Zhao Lin, spokesman for the bureau, told China Daily.
Zhao added that Chen passed a sobriety test.
Local police said they were still investigating the case.
