Landslides and floods in Jiangxi Province

Typhoon Haikui has destroyed many homes in Wuyuan, a county in Jiangxi Province. The county is located in a mountainous region and the heavy typhoon rains have caused mudslides and other hazards. Reporter Li Nan visited a mudslide-hit area in the county and filed this story.

Hills rivers beautiful countryside the perfect idyll. Wuyuan is renowned for some of the most beautiful landscapes in China. That was before Haikui hit.

On August 9th, Haikui brought heavy downpour to this area. On August 10th alone, 277 mm of rain fell. Many have lost their homes due to the flooding. What's worse, the rain has triggered dangerous mudslides.

The water level in local reservoirs far exceeds the safety limit, and workers have had to release flow to the lower reaches, putting at risk places further downstream.

Pan Desheng, Director, Dazhangxiang area, Jiangxi Province, "Dazhangxiang is in the mountainous area, and there can be all kinds of hazards after heavy rains, especially landslides. We've been arranging lectures for local villagers, so that they know how to respond in this kind of emergency situation."

Due to the rains and flooding, local authorities in Dazhangxiang have temporarily relocated around 8,000 locals to safer places and closed several tourist areas.
