Gao Shan, a fugitive suspect in a financial fraud case involving nearly 1 billion yuan (151 million U.S. dollars) has returned to China and surrendered to police, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Monday.
Gao served as chief of a sub-branch of the Bank of China (BOC) at Harbin in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and is thought to have collaborated with other suspects in masterminding and conducting the fraud between 2000 and 2004.
Gao and other suspects fled to Canada at the end of 2004 before the scandal was exposed, causing about 1 billion yuan's worth of economic losses to several local companies and organizations.
Since Gao and other suspects fled overseas, Chinese police forces have persevered to hunt them down, according to an announcement on the ministry's website.
