An official with the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) denied rumors that the administration will introduce new restrictions on TV series, according to a report from the Beijing-based Beijing Times on Wednesday.
Wang Weiping, the official, said at a symposium on TV dramas that the rumors on restrictions, which largely spread online, were idle speculation.
A report from the Beijing News on Aug. 3 stated that the SARFT would impose new restrictions on TV series, including requiring good and evil characters to be clearly represented in revolutionary- and history-themed TV dramas, banning imitations of overseas TV series and prohibiting made-for-TV adaptations of online content such as fiction and games.
"The administration suggested that television producers should control the amount and increase the quality of TV series," Wang said, adding that the industry will become more and more standardized.
At the symposium, industry expert Wang Pengju said cost increases, including higher salaries for actors and lower prices on TV content purchased online, have determined the quality of teleplays to some degree.
Director Zheng Xiaolong said that any theme could be made into a good drama series as long as it is thoughtfully developed.
