Three workers were buried and one died after a construction site collapsed in Changping district Friday.

A witness surnamed Liu, who passed the collapsed site at 7 am Friday, told the Global Times that one side of the 10-meter-high wall was entirely collapsed when he arrived there, and the workers nearby said about four or five people were buried.

"The rescuers were trying to remove the collapsed wall and all the roads around the construction site were cordoned off," Liu said. He was told the incident occurred at around 6 am. Police and paramedics had already surrounded the collapsed site, Liu said.

"Four workers were pouring cement before the collapse," the Beijing News quoted a construction worker, surnamed Wang, as saying. Wang added that only one of the four workers escaped.

Two injured workers were rescued 50 minutes after the collapse, and were sent to hospital, and one worker was deceased when his body was recovered several hours later, the Beijing News reported Sunday.

The deceased, in his 40s, was from Henan Province, the report said.

The construction site is inside the Beijing Future Science and Technology City, one of China's major technology centers built in 2009. The site is home to the headquarters of a number of new energy and State-owned enterprises.

A woman from the management office of the science city, who refused to be named, said she had heard about the incident, but did not know any details.

"The site is inside our City, but the construction company should take responsibility," the woman said. She did not know the name of the construction company.
