South China's metropolis Guangzhou will begin a pilot garbage sorting program in September, the Economic Information reported Tuesday.

The trial will offer a one-month grace period before imposing fines on people who do not follow the regulation on domestic waste sorting management of the city, according to the Guangzhou City Management Committee.

According to the regulation issued in 2011, people who do not sort waste will be fined 50 yuan ($7.86) each time, the paper said.

The city will also invest more than 400 million yuan ($62.9 million) in the garbage sorting project, including purchasing containers and building facilities.
