Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met in Beijing on Thursday with Arnie Roblan, co-speaker in the U.S. House of Representatives for the country's state of Oregon.

With Oregon having established the first Confucius Classroom program in the United States in 2008, Liu praised Oregon's pioneering role in China-United States cooperation at a local level.

Sino-U.S. relations have surged despite ups and downs in decades past, and this staying power has proven that the ties are deeply based in local regions and among the two peoples, according to Liu.

The state councilor praised Oregon's efforts to develop all-around cooperation with China, especially the passing of a bill in 2010 to make the instruction of Mandarin Chinese available to all public schools.

Liu said she expected Oregon to continue its contributions to the two peoples' friendship and the state-to-state ties.
