Vice premier attends funeral for Ethiopia's late PM

Chinese Special Envoy and Vice Premier Hui Liangyu attended the state funeral for Ethiopia's late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on Sunday.

Hui said as an outstanding Ethiopian leader and a famous African politician, Meles made great contribution to the establishment and development of China-Ethiopia comprehensive partnership.

The passing of Meles is not only a great loss to the Ethiopian and African people, but also a loss of a respectful friend for China, he said.

China cherishes its traditional friendship with Ethiopia very much, he said, adding that it will continue to work with the Eastern African country to push forward their comprehensive partnership.

The Ethiopian side appreciated the attendance of the Chinese official to the funeral.

The Ethiopian government will adhere to its policy to further develop relations and traditional friendship with China, it added.

Ethiopia on Sunday held a state funeral for Meles who passed away on Aug. 20.

The late premier was laid to rest at Holy Trinity Church in Addis Ababa following a ceremony that lasted for a half-day at Meskel Square.

Attendees of the funeral include heads of states, senior government officials and representatives of different countries, ambassadors, prominent figures and tens of thousands of Ethiopians.
