State Councilor Liu Yandong on Monday, also China's Teachers' Day, visited Zhang Lili, a middle school teacher who lost her legs in the act of saving two students from an onrushing bus.
Zhang Lili, a 29-year-old teacher at the No. 19 Middle School in the city of Jiamusi in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, was crossing a road outside the school's main gate when she saw two students standing in the way of an oncoming bus on May 8.
She successfully pushed the students out of harm's way, but was unable to avoid the bus herself.
Also on Monday, Liu visited the Beijing Normal University to celebrate its 110th anniversary of founding, and she offered festive greetings to the nation's teachers.
Liu spoke highly of the university from which a great number of teachers, scientists and excellent personnel have graduated.
Meeting with teachers, students and alumni of the university, Liu said good teachers are crucial to good education. She urged governments at all levels to invest more and improve the country's bank of teaching personnel while providing better working and living conditions to teachers.
