The State Oceanic Administration on Tuesday formally introduced maritime environment forecasting for the sea areas around the Diaoyu Islands.
Calling the move part of its official responsibilities, the administration said in a statement that the Diaoyu Islands have been China's inherent territory since ancient times and the surrounding sea areas have been part of the country's traditional territorial waters.
"China has indisputable sovereignty over them," the statement reads.
The forecasting service is significant for safeguarding China's maritime rights and interests as well as protecting the safety of fishermen, fishing boats and ocean patrol ships in the area, it said.
Starting from Tuesday, the administration will issue daily forecasts on ocean conditions, sea waves and water temperatures for the subsequent 24 hours, which will be broadcast via the national broadcaster, radio and Internet media.
