Every day a group of people do an epic commute across Beijing. These people are part of a migrant crowd in the city, only not your typical migrant crowd. They are white-collar workers, who work in or around Guomao and the CBD, but live in Tongzhou district or Yanjiao in Hebei Province, where the price of housing is comparatively cheaper than property within Beijing's Fifth Ring Road.
During the working week, they wake up early and wait in line to get the bus to work. After finishing their work, they do the same journey in reverse.
It can sometimes take them an hour or more to wait for a bus alone, with the line often winding under Guomao Bridge for hundreds of meters.
Then, due to the intense traffic in Beijing, it can take them even longer to get home.
Even though they are white-collar workers and thus part of a generation that has great expectations, they still feel they have to do this. It seems a long commute is a better price to pay than higher rent.
