He Qi'en, a 14-year-old high school student, smiled as he flicked through photographs on his cellphone on Sept 23. He had taken them at an exhibition of paintings in Jinjiang Hotel in downtown Chengdu, Sichuan province, the day before.

"The 30 paintings are by Chengdu students and depict the life of students in the city and places familiar to us," he said.

The exhibition was part of the two-day 2012 Education Forum for Asia Annual Conference, which kicked off on Sept 22.

Supported by the Boao Forum for Asia, the Ministry of Education and Sichuan provincial government, the event, themed "Asian Education: Toward a More Prosperous and Better Future", attracted more around 500 participants from 30 countries to discuss a variety of education-related topics, including the development of education in western China and sustainable development in educational systems.

The forum opened with an award ceremony for the 7th Asian University Students' Photo Exhibition.

According to Chengdu vice-mayor Fu Yonglin, more than 4,000 photographs were submitted to the competition's organizing committee and 37 students from China and abroad won prizes.

The photo exhibition was organized by the Education Forum for Asia, China Youth Daily, China University Media Alliance and Chengdu bureau of expo affairs.
