More than 50 scholars and experts from across China attended a seminar in Shanghai Wednesday, discussing the recent row over the Diaoyu Islands.
At the seminar organized by the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, scholars and experts focused on the history of the Diaoyu Islands, the impact of Japan's recent actions in the Asia-Pacific region and the development of Sino-Japanese relations.
Xu Dunxin, president of the Fangxia Cultural Exchange Association
"Japan's illegal acts have greatly harmed Sino-Japanese relations, and constitute a great threat to the stability of East Asia … Japan should have a correct attitude toward the Diaoyu Islands and return to diplomatic negotiations with sincerity."
Mo Shijian, dean of the Faculty of Law at University of Macao
"The recent Japanese 'purchase' was an opportunity for China to strengthen real control over Diaoyu Islands. China could enhance law enforcement there."

Yang Jiemian, president of the Shanghai Institute for International Studies
"Japan will lose its role in East Asia as a leading economy if it refuses to correct its wrong acts and become a troublemaker."
