Many people are choosing to drive home this holiday and for the first time, most don't have to pay the expressway tolls. A couple who work in Beijing are planning to celebrate their wedding in their hometown of Huzhou in Zhejiang Province. But they've discovered that driving was perhaps not the best way to go.
It's a trip back home that will start them off on their future life as husband and wife. Wu Kai and Yao Bimin will hold their wedding this month.
Wu Kai said, "These are our azuki beans with our names. We can't always be together with our parents, so we're giving them the beans as a present and hope they'll plant them and be able to harvest them in Spring."
As the old Chinese saying goes, good things can take a long time. On the way back to their hometown the couple ran into heavy traffic on the motorway.
It usually takes them about 15 hours to drive home from Beijing. As planned, they set out at 2:50 am on Sunday morning in order to arrive in good time for the reunion dinner with their families.
An accident on the Dayangfang section of the Beijing-Shanghai Highway slowed the traffic to a standstill. After 5 hours, the couple was still only 120 kilometers from Beijing, and skipped having lunch in order to make headway.
Yao Bimin said, "We ate snacks we'd brought with us. We didn't waste time stopping to eat because we wanted to get back in time."
To save time, the couple took turns driving, so they wouldn't have to make any breaks en-route. 20 hours later and 6 hours later than planned, they finally made it home to their families at midnight on Sunday.
But it's never too late to celebrate a family reunion.
