A recent online posting reporting that the famous Hengshan Mountain in Hunan Province is being destroyed by rock excavators has attracted the attention of many netizens, who rapidly forwarded the notice and have called for protection of the mountain.
A student from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) posted on Weibo on October 10 that he had returned to his hometown of Hengshan, Hunan Province during the National Day holiday and found that Hengshan Mountain was being destroyed.
He also put several pictures of the mountain before and after the exploitation project began.
According to local residents, developers have been mining there for months.
They have tried to stop the project, which has caused serious damage to the local environment, but failed.
Local authorities have gotten involved in the case, and say that government workers have been sent to the sites to negotiate with developers.
The Hengshan Mountain scenic area covers Nanyue district and Hengshan county, while the exploitation sites are located only in Hengshan county.
