A Tencent Weibo user named "Ren Jie" who falsified her "verified" weibo account claiming to be a senior commanding officer of the People's Liberation Army was handed a five-day administrative detention by police, said the State Internet Information Office Thursday.
Ren used her real surname but everything else in her background was a fraud. She is not a member of the army and she lives in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, not Beijing, where she claimed she was stationed.
Two PLA uniforms and over 10 epaulets were found at Ren's home, and she admitted that she spent 180 yuan for a fake military officer's identity card.
The information office also critized Tencent for failing to authenticate Ren's Weibo account before declaring it "verified."
Over 6,000 Weibo accounts have been shut down by Internet information regulators since March.
