A Shanghai court ordered a man to pay 8,800 yuan ($1,407) in compensation for punching a woman in the face at a movie theater, Xuhui District People's Court said Thursday.
The plaintiff, whom the court called Xiaosi, filed a 16,000 yuan lawsuit against a man whom the court dubbed Afeng after an incident in February at a cinema in Xujiahui, according to a press release from the court.
Xiaosi was trying to watch a movie with her friends, but found herself continually disturbed by the man sitting next to her, who was talking with his companion and fidgeting in his seat during the screening, the court said.
As soon as the movie ended, she complained to her friends about the man, who overheard her. An argument broke out and the man, Afeng, threw her down and punched her in the left eye. Afeng was detained for five days and fined 200 yuan.
In court, Afeng said that he lost control of himself after he overheard Xiaosi say he and his wife lacked manners and were behaving like idiots.
The court ruled that Afeng was responsible for the injury because of his poor self-control.
