The Peking Opera Han Yu Niang has taken the stage during the 14th Shanghai International Arts Festival. And it is the first drama to be shown during this year's festival.
Han Yu Niang is adapted from the famous Peking Opera Sheng Si Hen, or Sorrow in Life and Death, by Pekjing Opera master Mei Lanfang. The retelling makes some major changes to the original tale, but keeps the key points. The opera tells the story of a brave and patriotic young woman in the Song Dynasty.
It chronicles her sacrifices to help her husband join the army and fight for the nation. As the newest opera produced by the China National Peking Opera Company, Han Yu Niang has added a number of modern elements to the traditional Peking Opera format. The combination of the modern and traditional, together with acclaimed performances, has garnered the show great praise from audiences.
