Bearing no armor and taking a few steps away from the fencing strip, three Chinese fencers donated two police dogs and one van to the Fuling District police bureau of Chongqing Municipality in commemoration of a police dog named Lei Ming, which died in the pursuit of serial killer Zhou Kehua in August.
Zhou was suspected of killing nine and wounding several others in armed robberies since 2004. Fuling police dispatched Lei Ming and other three police dogs to track him down near Gele Mountain on August 10.
"After 12-hour non-stop work in the 40℃ heat, Lei Ming suffered a heatstroke and died later in the hospital," said his trainer Qu Jin, "Not only was he part of the police equipment, but he was a close friend to me as well."
"No matter how hard and dangerous the tasks we took on were, he was always at the frontline protecting me," he said.
Dong Zhaozhi, the former world champion and now assistant coach of the Chinese foil team, and world champion winners Ma Jianfei and Zhu Jun all love dogs. After coming across Lei Ming's story online, the trio decided to donate two new dogs to Fuling police.
"I hope they will take the place of Lei Ming and become competent police dogs to help secure people's safety," said Ma Jianfei.
Zhou Kehua was shot dead in Congqing municipality on August 14, 2012.
