The Shanghai Highway Management Department estimated that traffic will increase by 50 percent at highway toll booths in the city during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, said Yan Jionghao, the department's deputy director.
Like it did during the National Day holiday, the local government will waive highway tolls during the Spring Festival.
The department also plans to encourage other cities in the Yangtze Delta Region to follow its example and forego handing out toll cards at toll booths during the holiday.
