2012-11-28 13:10 Global Times     Web Editor: Wang YuXia comment

Southwest China's Yunnan Province has logged more than 100,000 cases of HIV/AIDS since it began taking records on the disease, Xu Heping, head of the Yunnan Provincial AIDS Prevention Bureau, said.

As of the end of October, the majority of new HIV/AIDS cases in Yunnan were farmers and the unemployed, Xu said, adding that the proportion of infections contracted through sex has been increasing in the province, while its spread remains stable in most regions.

As of October 31, Yunnan reported 10,447 new cases of HIV/AIDS and 2,411 HIV/AIDS-related deaths this year. Over 51 percent of infections were contracted through sex and nearly 40 percent were transmitted through drug use, said Xu.

Yunnan reports more cases than any other province or region in China.
